Our featured speaker was State Representative Vanna Howard, who we have endorsed for State Senate in the special election primary on February 3rd, 2026. She came to the United States at 11 years old, after surviving a communist genocide. She lost her dad, three siblings, and grandparents, and faced homelessness, hunger, and domestic violence, but this community got her through it. She has dedicated her life to giving back. From working for Congresswoman Niki Tsongas helping constituents in Lowell, Dracut, Pepperell, Tyngsborough, and Dunstable, to serving in the District Attorney’s Office, and volunteering with more than 50 nonprofits. As State Representative, she has secured millions to combat the housing crisis, strengthen childcare, and make our community safer. As an AFL-CIO Community organizer, his role is to serve the entire Merrimack Valley region, promoting the efforts of social justice, addiction recovery, labor, and community service. Solidarity Lowell June Meeting Featuring Lowell Alliance
The May meeting of Solidarity Lowell was held on May 18, 2025. Our featured speaker was Maroni Minter from MIRA, the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition. Maroni is a proud immigrant, born and raised in Gabon, West Africa. He moved to the USA in 2004, lived in Vermont for 20 year before he moved to Boston last year, when he accepted the Political Director position at MIRA. Prior to joining MIRA, he was the Activism Manager at Ben & Jerry's, and also served as the Campaign Director for the ACLU of Vermont. Solidarity Lowell May Meeting Featuring Maroni Minter from MIRA
Our featured speaker this month was Caroline Sullivan from The Democracy Behind Bars Coalition (DBBC), a coalition of advocacy and community organizations and individuals on both sides of the wall who are fighting to protect the right of incarcerated people to participate in democracy and hold government accountable. The DBBC is working to ensure incarcerated people who have the right to vote have access to casting a counted ballot, restoring the right to vote to all incarcerated voters, and ensuring that over-policed communities are not stripped of political power through prison gerrymandering. Their work — led by incarcerated activists and experts and building on Massachusetts' history of incarcerated civic leadership — is paying off.
