VIGIL to Condemn Human Rights Violations at the US Border
In the wake of the 2009 coup and the subsequent increasing violence, more than 100 members of Congress have repeatedly warned the State Department (first under Clinton and then Secretary John Kerry) about the deteriorating security situation in Honduras. The homicide rate in Honduras, already one of the highest in the world, increased by 50 percent from 2008 to 2013; political repression, the murder of opposition political candidates, peasant organizers, environmental defenders like Bertha Caceres and LGBT activists increased and continue to this day.
The violence and insecurity were exacerbated by a generalized institutional collapse. Drug-related violence has worsened amid allegations of rampant corruption in Honduras’ police and government. Honduran security forces have engaged in a wave of killings and other human rights crimes with impunity. Many of these same security forces receive their training in the U.S. and are heavily armed and supplied with aid dollars from Washington.
We stand up to loudly denounce the bipartisan hypocrisy and lack of regard for the human rights of Central Americans and demand immediate relief for those seeking safe haven from the conditions for which OUR government is largely responsible!
