Wednesdays:  January 9 and February 13

Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) is looking for volunteers for their new clinic in Lowell. They are in need of:

Clinic Coordinators:  Coordinate clinic operation
Intake Volunteer (2-3):  Complete confidential client paperwork at clinic
Hospitality (2-3):  Prepare and serve light supper  / refreshments for clinic
Child care (1-2):  Supervise (as needed) young children during the clinic
Interpreters (2-3), as needed (Spanish, Portuguese, Other)
Additional volunteers will be needed to support ongoing fundraising, marketing and outreach.

Vigil at the Boston ICE Detention Center

Sunday, December 23, 3pm, Meet at 20 Bradston St, Boston

Please join us to remember, to see, to love those who are forgotten. As we enter the Christmas season, our American deportation nation continues to keep our immigrant neighbors away from their families. Join us for an interfaith vigil at the South Bay Detention Center, co-sponsored by Congregation Beth Elohim in Acton and South Acton Congregational Church. We will sing Christmas songs and pray the traditional Jewish afternoon prayer (“mincha”). People of all religions (and no religion) invited! We will also be delivering Holiday Cards for the Detainees so bring one if you can! Also, as we walk together to the overpass where we will show our support for those in detention, we will walk past a group of individuals suffering in active addiction. If you feel so called, please bring a few care packages to hand out on the way to support our brothers and sisters. Parking is available across from the entrance to the Hampton Inn at 811 Mass Ave.

Jericho Walk at Burlington ICE Office

The Jericho Walk is a silent interfaith prayer and act of solidarity. The walk draws inspiration from the Battle of Jericho, in which the community marched around the city of Jericho seven times, causing the city walls to fall. The Jericho Walk of today is a silent, peaceful, and prayerful walk to bring down the walls of our unjust immigration system and is open to people of all or no faiths. Please bring signs calling for just treatment of those who are caught in our broken immigration system.

Andover Rally Against the Raytheon-Saudi Alliance

Raytheon is the largest supplier of weapons to Saudi Arabia for the Yemen War. Raytheon bombs have been used in many of the Saudi attacks on civilians during the war.   Yemen is facing the world’s worst humanitarian catastrophe with bomb deaths, one million cases of cholera, and widespread famine. Comment on the Proposed Public Charge Rule

The Trump administration wants to slam the door on working-class immigrants by subjecting anyone who earns less than 250% of the federal poverty line ($62,750 for a family of 4) to intense scrutiny, and effectively excluding anyone below 125% of FPL ($31,375 for a family of 4). Immigrants applying for a green card or visa could be deemed to be a “public charge” – someone who depends on the government – and turned away if they earn below 250% of FPL and use any of a wide range of public programs for working families, or are deemed to be likely to use them in the future. This is an assault on America’s fundamental values, and we must fight back.

Cosecha Rally for Immigrant Workers

Monday, December 10th, various times and locations throughout the day

Join us as Cosecha and the Grinch show Boston what Christmas looks like for immigrant workers who have worked for months without getting paid by their boss. Without money for rent, food, presents, and travel, workers who have not gotten paid will not be able to celebrate as they should be able to with their loved ones. We will be in Sullivan Station in the morning, in downtown at lunch hour, and in Maverick Square in East Boston in the evening. Join us to spread the word about wage theft in Massachusetts. We will be walking through Boston with a ‘Grinch’ representing employers who won’t pay and handing out information.

Ollin Solidarity Caravan: Freedom of Movement is a Human Right

Saturday, November 17th, 12-3pm, US Immigration Courts at JFK Federal Building, 15 New Sudbury Street, Room 320, Boston

Ollin is the Nahuatl word for movement and everyone has the right to move whether it be because of political, economic or corporate violence, oppression, racial or sexual discrimination, environmental catastrophe or circumstances, to connect with family and friends, or just because they have the desire to do so. We will gather outside immigration court to participate in a vigil; a land honoring ceremony; dance, drumming, and music; to say the names and share the stories of those on the migrant caravan being stopped by armed military, borders and walls, along with those facing ICE violence and imprisonment right here in Boston.

Boston Public Schools Walkout for Black and Brown Lives

Mayor Walsh and Boston Public Schools have proposed the closing of West Roxbury High School as well as the McCormick Middle School. Both of these educational facilities occupy black and brown children who will be extremely affected by these closures. Join every Boston Public School Young person and Young people across the City of Boston as we walk out for Black & Brown lives and meet at City Hall to do a silent protest of a “Die In”.

Help Lawrence Cosecha Members Assist Immigrants at the Border

Three volunteer organizers (Gabriela, Reyna, and Carlos) are raising money to fly out to the Brownsville, TX border and buy supplies to donate to the asylum seekers and migrants with their bare necessities. We are asking our community to help us get there so we may support our friends crossing, help local grassroots and community movements on the field, document efforts, and create the conditions for others to come to join as we welcome our brothers and sisters in the caravans with radical love. We plan to arrive in Brownsville, TX as soon as possible and will be staying for several weeks to a month. Your contribution will help us with flights and expenses to support migrants directly with food, clothes, and hygienic products.

TODAY: Nobody is Above the Law Mueller Protection Rapid Response Rally

Nobody is above the law! Donald Trump has installed a crony to oversee the special counsel’s Trump-Russia investigation, crossing a red line set to protect the investigation. By replacing Rod Rosenstein with just-named Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker as special counsel Robert Mueller’s boss on the investigation, Trump has undercut the independence of the investigation. Whitaker has publicly outlined strategies to stifle the investigation and cannot be allowed to remain in charge of it. The Nobody Is Above the Law network demands that Whitaker immediately commit not to assume supervision of the investigation.

The Trump administration wants to slam the door on working-class immigrants by subjecting anyone who earns less than 250% of the federal poverty line ($62,750 for a family of 4) to intense scrutiny, and effectively excluding anyone below 125% of FPL ($31,375 for a family of 4). Immigrants applying for a green card or visa could be deemed to be a “public charge” – someone who depends on the government – and turned away if they earn below 250% of FPL and use any of a wide range of public programs for working families, or are deemed to be likely to use them in the future. This is an assault on America’s fundamental values, and we must fight back.

Nobody is above the law! Donald Trump is publicly considering firing special counsel Robert Mueller. This week, it became clear that he could fire Rosenstein as well. This would be a constitutional crisis for our country. Our response in the minutes and hours following a power grab will dictate what happens next, which is why an immediate response is imperative. If Mueller/Rosenstein are fired or forced out, this will trigger the protest. If they resign, it will not.

At 6:30pm, come together at the island in front of City Hall to rally peacefully and make a positive imprint on the community. Then at 7:30pm, after the demonstration, we’ll walk to 1981 Ramen Bar (129 Merrimack Street) to have some food and/or refreshing beverages, and get to know each other and discuss the events of the week! Solidarity Rally with Local 26 Striking Marriott Hotel Workers

Marriott is the largest and most profitable hotel chain in the world, but UNITE HERE Local 26 workers in Boston have had their contracts expire as they struggle to win basic job security, safer working conditions, and jobs that are enough to support their families. Although UNITE HERE workers provide the exemplary guest services that keep Marriott profitable, too many find that when you work at Marriott, one job is not enough. USW Gasworkers Solidarity Lobby Day

This highly profitable corporation has cut workers off from their healthcare and wants to force families into economic insecurity in order to enhance their bargaining leverage. What National Grid is doing is wrong, and we can’t let it happen. Rally with community and labor organizations and workers across all sectors to ask legislators to hold National Grid accountable for safety violations, and end the lockout to protect public safety. Volunteers Needed: Citizenship Clinic

Saturday, October 13th, 9am-3:30pm, Christ Church United, 1 Bartlett St, Lowell

Becoming a U.S. citizen is one of the most important and valuable things an immigrant can do – which is why promoting naturalization and helping people apply is a key part of MIRA’s mission. At our monthly clinics, we guide applicants through the naturalization form, step by step, and let them know if they qualify for a waiver of federal fees. People sign up in advance (usually 20–40, though at this one, our first after the summer break, we expect a larger group), and MIRA’s Citizenship Team, supported by volunteers, go through the process with each applicant, one-on-one. If you’ve never volunteered at one of our clinics before, or haven’t done it for a long time, we’ll need you to come in at 9am to get basic training before we start.

Assist Re-United Families in North Chelmsford and Lowell

Together & Free is recruiting volunteers to join ‘support pods’ for families that were separated while crossing the border into the U.S. and are now reunited in the Boston area. Each volunteer will be part of a small group that is dedicated to one or two families, and together, the group will make an ongoing commitment to help the family by gathering donations on their behalf, visiting them to drop off food or clothes, giving them rides to appointments, helping them navigate accessing services, etc. Each individual volunteer will have flexibility to help when they are able, and the family will have a network to draw on. At the moment, there is an urgent need for more volunteers to help families in North Chelmsford and Lowell. These are Spanish-speaking families, so speaking Spanish is a plus, but not necessary.

Jericho Walk at ICE Office

The Jericho Walk is a silent interfaith prayer and act of solidarity. The walk draws inspiration from the Battle of Jericho, in which the community marched around the city of Jericho seven times, causing the city walls to fall. The Jericho Walk of today is a silent, peaceful, and prayerful walk to bring down the walls of our unjust immigration system and is open to people of all or no faiths.
