Examining Whiteness Workshop – Session #2:

May 14, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Examining Whiteness Workshop – Session #2: Facilitated by Dr. Julie A Mavity Maddalena

(You can come to this workshop whether you went to workshop #1 or not!)

Recent events from Charlottesville to the NFL to the White House have raised awareness about white supremacy and how it operates in today’s society. It has raised an opportunity to examine what it means to be white, and to participate in a system that supports white supremacy. In our first workshop we talked about the construction of race in the US and the realities of racism in systems, institutions, and interpersonal interactions. We began conversations about specific ways our institutions subtly perpetuate racism and ways we can disrupt that. This next workshop will build on this work, digging more deeply into what it means to be an ally, how to attend to intersections of gender and class in these efforts, and more concrete steps we can take in various aspects of our lives.

Dr. Maddalena holds a PhD in Religious Ethics from Southern Methodist University. She is currently Director of Spiritual Life at Brooks School in North Andover. She has facilitated Examining Whiteness workshops in Colorado, Texas, and here in Mass. Her research interests include Critical Studies of Whiteness and Critical Race Theories and Theologies.

To be held at the UU Congregation in Andover, 6 Locke Street. Directions: http://uuandover.org/directions
