SUMMARY:Safe Communities Act Lobby Day
DESCRIPTION:Over the past two years\, we’ve built a statewide movement to protect the rights and safety of all Massachusetts residents. We’ve passed trust and welcoming policies in dozens of communities. Now it’s time to ensure that everyone in our Commonwealth enjoys those protections. \nThe Safe Communities Act is back before the Mass. Legislature\, as SD.926 (Sen. Jamie Eldridge) and HD.1520 (Reps. Ruth Balser and Liz Miranda). It’s streamlined but has the same strong provisions to restore community trust and protect civil rights\, backed by a broad-based and diverse coalition. \nThe first step in our campaign is to recruit legislative cosponsors. On this lobby day\, with just two days to go before the Feb. 1 cosponsor deadline\, Safe Communities Coalition members will fan out across the State House\, visiting legislators to urge them to sign on and to fight to pass the Safe Communities Act in this session. \nLook up your legislators’ contact information to make advance appointments (preferred)\, and download our new factsheet to prepare for your visit and share a copy with legislative staff. Any questions\, please email us!

SUMMARY:Breaking the Cycle of Homelessness and Poor Health
DESCRIPTION:January 30 – 4:30-6:00 p.m.\, Boston University School of Public Health\n\nBreaking the Cycle of Homelessness and Poor Health\n\n\nFind tickets here. \n\nHomelessness and poor health are intricately linked. Physical and mental health issues are personal risk factors for homelessness\, particularly for older adults. Once homeless\, individuals are less likely to have access to health services and are at greater risk for a wide range of adverse health outcomes that can in turn make it harder for them to return to housing. About 70 percent of homeless people in King County\, Washington\, report one or more chronic health conditions\, such as physical disabilities\, chronic substance use\, and severe mental health conditions. About half say their condition prevents them from holding employment\, living in stable housing\, or taking care of themselves. It is nearly impossible to effectively deliver health care or supportive services for this scope of problems when people live outdoors in scattered and insecure locations. What can we in the public health community do to help break the cycle of homelessness and poor health?\n\nSpeaker: Hilary Godwin\, Dean and Professor\, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences\, University of Washington School of Public Health

SUMMARY:Community Choice Aggregation and YOU!
DESCRIPTION:Can Lowell help protect the planet from global warming? Green energy is one important tool communities like Lowell can use to stop climate change. \nCommunity Choice Aggregation (CCA) is a program that allows local governments like Lowell to use their collective buying power to purchase electricity on behalf of the residents\, businesses\, and municipal accounts within their service territory and to specify how much “green” energy is part of that service. \nIn order to better understand exactly how CCA works\, what it means for Lowell and how it relates to the environment and global warming\, 350 Mass-Lowell will host a presentation by Carol Oldham\, Executive Director of Massachusetts Community Action Network\, “What is Community Choice Aggregation\, Why it is important and How we can make it better.” \nThis presentation is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Black Love Day
DESCRIPTION:Come and gather with us to celebrate Black Love Day! Tell us how you choose to love your partners\, friends\, and most of all yourself. \nBlack Love Day was founded in 1993 by Ayo Handy Kendi\, director of the African American Holiday Association. According to Kendi\, it is the third nationally observed black holiday – one of atonement\, reconciliation and celebration. Black Love Day is observed as a 24-hour demonstration of black love\, demonstrated through five specific acts: love towards the Creator\, for self\, for the family\, within the black community and for the black race.
