SUMMARY:Lowell Education Justice Alliance (LEJA) monthly meeting
DESCRIPTION:Lowell Education Justice Alliance (LEJA) is a grassroots group of parents\, educators\, students\, school staff\, and concerned community members committed to building a stronger and better PUBLIC school system driven by community voices. We believe that policies and decisions are strongest when they are informed by those who are most impacted. Teachers\, parents and students must have a critical role in creating the schools our communities deserve. At the core of this work is a belief that quality\, equitable public schools are essential to a healthy society and so we will resist efforts to privatize our public schools. All students deserve to learn in an environment that is equitable\, joyful\, educational and inspiring. We are committed to building a stronger and better public school system that is driven by community voices. Many of the individuals and groups involved came together to keep the cap on charter schools in Massachusetts. Following our success on ballot question 2 we continue to organize for public schools that serve the needs of all of our students\, no matter where they live. By engaging all communities across the Commonwealth and building power through unity\, our parent\, student and teacher driven coalition is committed to working with our elected and appointed officials and holding them accountable to the actual needs and desires of the communities served by Lowell Public Schools. The negative impacts of high stakes testing and the push to privatize our public education system are prime concerns of LEJA. Contact us at: lowelleducationjusticealliance@gmail.com

SUMMARY:The Next Two Years and Beyond: A Movement Building Conference
DESCRIPTION:Confirmed Speakers: \nJohn Nichols is national affairs correspondent of The Nation. His most recent book is Horsemen of the Trumpocalypse: A Field Guide to the Most Dangerous People in America \nRev. Karlene Griffiths Sekou organizes with Black Lives Matter Boston \nPhyllis Bennis is director of the New Internationalism Project at the Institute for Policy Studies. The seventh edition of her Understanding the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict : A Primer was just published \nNika Elugardo defeated a powerful incumbent to become State Representative- Elect from Jamaica Plain and nearby areas of Boston \nGabe Camacho directs Project Voice at American Friends Service Committee \nPaul Shannon is active with AFSC and MAPA and organizes the Raytheon Antiwar Campaign \nMichele Brooks is Community Outreach Coordinator with the Massachusetts Sierra Club \nTarso Ramos (invited) is Executive Director of Political Research Associates\, which investigates the far right to support movements for social justice \nThe progressive\, peace\, and justice movements face new and difficult conditions in the Trump presidency. Attacks on labor and working people; tax cuts for the rich\, sharply increased military spending\, and escalated wars and international crises; anti-immigrant and xenophobic rhetoric and policies; escalated racism\, sexism\, and assaults on LGBTQ people; are among the urgent challenges we face. And as wildfires spread and glaciers melt\, the Trump administration is doubling down on policies that guarantee catastrophic climate change. \nThe far right controls the national and most state governments and is on the offensive on every front. While Democrats may regain control of the House this November\, the reactionary forces that have been unleashed and organized by Trumpism are determined to continue their offensive in the years to come\, posing serious dangers to living standards and to social justice\, as well as to democracy\, civil liberties\, and our ability to organize for social change. \nFortunately\, a new progressive movement has risen to resist Trumpism\, exemplified by Black Lives Matter\, the 2016 Bernie Sanders campaign and wave of progressive candidates running in 2018\, Poor People’s Campaign\, Women’s Marches\, Fight for $15\, March for Our Lives\, and the responses to Charlottesville and to the separation of migrant families. \nThe resistance to the reactionaries is divided between progressives\, who seek fundamental changes in the economy and social structure to the benefit of working and oppressed people\, and neoliberals and centrists\, who seek the stabilization of the corporate order along with continued austerity and militarism. Although we need to join with the centrists to fend off the reactionary assault\, we know that they are equally responsible for the extreme income and wealth gaps as well as militarism and war — so we also need to challenge them in order to build a powerful\, coherent and energetic progressive movement that will contend for national power in 2020 and in the years to come. \nA major weakness of the progressive wing is a tendency to avoid confronting U.S. militarism\, particularly the dangers of nuclear war and of war with Iran\, Korea\, and Russia. \nThe goal of this conference is to take stock of the political landscape after the midterm election\, chart the path towards a unified progressive movement over the coming years\, and educate and motivate our supporters towards more effective and more unified efforts. \nPreliminary List of Breakouts: \nTwo Minutes to Midnight: Campaigning to Reverse the Growing Nuclear Dangers\nMiddle East Wars: New Dangers\, New Opportunities\nState Legislature Agenda\nElectoral strategies\nClimate\, Environmental Justice and the Road Map to Renewables\nFrom Explosions to Solutions in Merrimack Valley\nAnti-Racism for activists\nBlack Lives Matter\nJustice System Crisis\nRight Wing\nK-12 Education\nHigher education/ Student Debt\nLabor\, Economic Justice\nBuilding the Movement for Healthcare Justice\nHousing – Displacement\nImmigrant Rights\nWomen’s march\, supreme court\, #MeToo\nPoor People’s Campaign\nFaith and the progressive movement \nRegistration: $35 general admission; $25 for member of a cosponsoring organization; $10 student or low income. Includes morning coffee\, lunch\, and post-conference reception. Register online at next-two-years.brownpapertickets.com\, or mail check to Massachusetts Peace Action Education Fund\, 11 Garden St\, Cambridge\, MA 02138 and write “Next Two Years” on the memo line. \nTransportation: Park in the Simmons School of Management garage; enter from Ave. Louis Pasteur. Pick up yellow ticket at conference registration desk to receive discounted parking rate. Simmons parking info. \nEndorsers: Organizations are invited to endorse the conference. Endorsers can set up a literature table\, will be acknowledged at the conference\, and are encouraged to publicize the event to their members. A sliding scale contribution between $25-100 is requested to help offset our expenses. Endorsers can sign up at next2yrs-endorse.bpt.me/. \nSponsored by: Massachusetts Peace Action\, American Friends Service Committee\, Black Lives Matter Boston\, Progressive Democrats of America\, Campaign for Peace\, Disarmament\, and Common Security\, Progressive Massachusetts\, and Our Revolution Massachusetts. \nQuestions: Cole Harrison\, cole@maspeaceaction.org\, 617-354-2169\, or any of the sponsors\, with questions or to participate in this effort.

SUMMARY:Ollin Solidarity Caravan: Freedom of Movement Is a Human Right
DESCRIPTION:No Borders\, No Walls\, No Prisons! We will not be complicit!\nOllin is the Nahuatl word for movement and everyone has the right to move whether it be because of political\, economic or corporate violence\, oppression\, racial or sexual discrimination\, environmental catastrophe or circumstances\, to connect with family and friends\, or just because they have the desire to do so. We will gather outside immigration court to participate in a vigil; a land honoring ceremony; dance\, drumming\, and music; to say the names and share the stories of those on the migrant caravan being stopped by armed military\, borders and walls\, along with those facing ICE violence and imprisonment right here in Boston. We will stand against the threat to birthright citizenship and for the right for our community to obtain driver’s licenses. We will insist that all relationships with ICE be severed and for permanent protection for all. Afterwards we will form our own “Solidarity Caravan” and move through the streets to South Bay Detention Center to deliver our messages and well wishes to those being held inside and demand that Sheriff Tompkins ends the ICE contract! \nSin Fronteras\, Sin Muros\, Sin Prisiones!

SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Our 9th annual vigil for International Transgender Day of Remembrance on Saturday\, November 17\, beginning at 6pm . The vigil is organized by the Welcoming Congregation Committee of the church\, as part of our commitment to being welcoming and inclusive by honoring the dates that are special to members of the LGBTQ+ community and advocating on issues important to them. \nThe event will begin at 6pm with a gathering\, a procession\, and a brief ceremony on the Chelmsford Common. \nThe second part of the lay-led vigil will meet in the Chapel (next to the parking lot). In a service that will include music\, the names of those killed around the world during the past year as a result of transphobia will be read. The vigil will end with words by Pat Taber and a brief period of fellowship. \nThere will be child care. \nPeople are welcome to come for either or both parts of the vigil. \nPat Taber is a transgender person who has been a political activist on this year’s campaign to preserve Massachusetts’ Transgender Public Accommodations protection Law. She is a veteran\, a proud father and a software engineer. She has a deep connection to the transgender community and strongly promotes trans inclusion into society at large. She views being transgender as a gift given to a select few as a part of God’s plan for humanity. She views the death of a transgender person to be a loss\, not just to the community\, but to a society that needs the unique gifts they bring. \nInternational Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is observed every November around the world. TDOR was first organized in 1999 by transgender woman and activist Gwendolyn Ann Smith\, marking the murder of Rita Hester the previous year in Allston\, Massachusetts. It has been held annually ever since in a growing number of locations to raise awareness about the continued violence that the transgender community suffers because of intolerance. While the official date is November 20\, observances are often scheduled on various dates within a week or so\, so that nearby events do not conflict with each other. \nThe church is located at 2 Westford Street\, on the Chelmsford Common.
