SUMMARY:Solidarity Rally With Local 26 Striking Marriott Hotel Workers
DESCRIPTION:Join us to rally with striking Marriott workers and say one job should be enough! On October 20\, the biggest hotel company in the world will hear us from Boston and more cities across the U.S. and Canada. \nOn October 3\, workers walked out at seven Marriott-operated hotels\, including the Aloft Boston Seaport District\, the Element Boston Seaport District\, the Ritz-Carlton Boston\, the Sheraton Boston\, the W Hotel Boston\, the Westin Boston Waterfront\, and the Westin Copley Place. This is the first hotel strike in Boston’s history. \nMarriott is the largest and most profitable hotel chain in the world\, but UNITE HERE Local 26 workers in Boston have had their contracts expire as they struggle to win basic job security\, safer working conditions\, and jobs that are enough to support their families. Although UNITE HERE workers provide the exemplary guest services that keep Marriott profitable\, too many find that when you work at Marriott\, one job is not enough. Workers are making a sacrifice to win jobs that are enough to live in the communities where they work and have the dignity of job security and workplace safety. Please help us make this a reality. \nSee you in the streets October 20! #MarriottStrike #1job

SUMMARY:ericho Walk At ICE Office
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our monthly Jericho Walk at the ICE office in Burlington\, MA. \nThe Jericho Walk is a silent interfaith prayer and act of solidarity. The walk draws inspiration from the Battle of Jericho\, in which the community marched around the city of Jericho seven times\, causing the city walls to fall. The Jericho Walk of today is a silent\, peaceful\, and prayerful walk to bring down the walls of our unjust immigration system and is open to people of all or no faiths. \nPlease bring signs calling for just treatment of those who are caught in our broken immigration system\, suggested messages “Keep Families Together”\, “No Family Separation”\, “Not One More/Ni Una Mas”\, “Not In Our Name”. Please refrain from signs explicitly endorsing or condemning any political candidate or official. \nWe will walk\, pray and sing together. \nWe will gather in front of the office\, along District Ave\, just look for the people holding signs.

SUMMARY:Together & Free
DESCRIPTION:Together & Free\, and we are looking to recruit some volunteers to join ‘support pods’ for families that were separated while crossing the border into the U.S. and are now reunited in the Boston area. Each volunteer will be part of a small group that is dedicated to one or two families\, and together\, the group will make an ongoing commitment to help the family by gathering donations on their behalf\, visiting them to drop off food or clothes\, giving them rides to appointments\, helping them navigate accessing services\, etc. Each individual volunteer will have flexibility to help when they are able\, and the family will have a network to draw on. At the moment\, there is an urgent need for more volunteers to help families in North Chelmsford and Lowell. These are Spanish-speaking families\, so facility with Spanish is a plus\, but many of the support activities can be handled using Google translate and enthusiastic hand gestures (I speak from experience). Please contact me if you are interested! You can email me at madeleine.e.jacobs@gmail.com. Thank you!

SUMMARY:Citizenship Clinic in Lowell
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE THE DATE CHANGE!!! \nBecoming a U.S. citizen is one of the most important and valuable things an immigrant can do – which is why promoting naturalization and helping people apply is a key part of MIRA’s mission. \nAt our monthly clinics\, we guide applicants through the naturalization form\, step by step\, and let them know if they qualify for a waiver of federal fees. People sign up in advance (usually 20–40\, though at this one\, our first after the summer break\, we expect a larger group)\, and MIRA’s Citizenship Team\, supported by volunteers\, go through the process with each applicant\, one-on-one. \nThe clinics include four stations: 1) check-in and registration; 2) screening for eligibility; 3) completing the application; and 4) quality control. \nNote that this clinic is in Lowell\, not at the usual Boston location. If you live in the Boston area but want to join us\, we may be able to arrange a ride for you; please note in the sign-up form if you need or can provide a ride! \nImportant: If you’ve never volunteered at one of our clinics before\, or haven’t done it for a long time\, we’ll need you to come in at 9am to get basic training before we start. \nIf you are a client\, please call (617) 350-5480\, x200 and leave a message if we don’t answer. We’ll call back! \nTo learn more\, go to https://www.miracoalition.org/citizenship. Any questions\, please email citizenship@miracoalition.org. \nThank you for volunteering!

SUMMARY:Lowell Democracy School In Action
DESCRIPTION:We’re still six weeks away from the Nov. 6 election\, and we’ve already seen some amazing things. Bolstered by hard-working grassroots activists\, Ayanna Pressley made history as the first African-American woman to be elected to Congress from Massachusetts. Progressive first-time candidates won races from western Mass.\, to Framingham\, to Boston. And across the U.S.\, campaigns have won against the odds by mobilizing “low-propensity” voters\, including immigrants and people of color. \nAs a 501(c)(3) nonprofit\, MIRA doesn’t endorse specific candidates. But we do believe passionately in educating and mobilizing voters. The ballot is one of our most powerful tools to effect change\, and at this critical time in our country\, we can’t afford not to use it. \nFrom now until election day\, MIRA will be organizing canvasses and phone banks to get out the immigrant vote. And we want to help YOU do the same. \nYou came to Democracy School\, so we know you want to fight for change. Now let’s step it up: are you ready to organize your own canvasses and phone banks? Join us in collaboration with the MA Voter Table and Lowell Votes for a hands-on training on:\n* Best practices for canvassing and phone-banking\n* Key do’s and don’ts\n* Effective messaging on the phone and at the door\n* Planning and using miniVAN\nAt the end of the session\, we’ll go canvassing together and put it all into practice. \nTime is short to make an impact this year. Come get the training you need to become a leader in mobilizing voters for Nov. 6! \nPlease click through to RSVP on EventBrite and not just here\, so we can have all your info and send you updates if needed!
