SUMMARY:Change the Massachusetts Flag and Seal
DESCRIPTION:In the year 1675 English colonists beheaded Metacom\, the supreme sachem of the Wampanoag people. For years afterwards his head was displayed on a pike in the town center of Plymouth. Four centuries later\, the state of Massachusetts embraces that history of genocide through their state flag and seal where the sword of Miles Standish still hangs above the Native people’s head. The policies to push aside and disinherit Native people of their lands also continue in the state of Massachusetts\, as the Wampanoag tribe of Mashpee have been targeted to have their tribal reservation taken out of federal trust. This would be the first time in over 80 years that a native reservation would be terminated. \nThe sword over the head of Native people of Massachusetts draws from the literal history of colonization\, and the metaphorical symbol depicts the continued threat to Native peoples land in this state as less than one half of one percent of native peoples’ territories remain in Native hands. How can Native people expect justice in a court\, in a state\, from an officer\, who hail a flag with the symbols of genocide and oppression? How can Native people expect a change in policy to eliminate their existence if they cannot see a simple change in the state flag? \nThe time is now! With the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower landing approaching in 2020\, it’s time to change the Massachusetts Flag and Seal. \nThe bloody wars of 17th Century New England forged the American approach to warfare and conquest which still prevails today in our nation’s global military footprint and continual invasions of other countries. Symbolism is important. Let’s change the Massachusetts flag and seal to one depicting peace and reconciliation rather than conquest. \nThe event will share information about a developing campaign to change the flag and seal\, including legislation to be filed in the State Legislature in January and a town meeting campaign. We will also learn about the Trump administration’s challenge to Mashpee Wampanoag sovereignty. Join us to learn\, discuss\, and make plans! \nSpeakers: \nJean-Luc Pierite\, president of the board of directors\, North American Indian Center of Boston \nHartman Deetz\, Mashpee Wampanoag \nDavid Detmold\, organizer\, Change the Massachusetts State Flag and Seal Campaign \nKevin Peterson\, founder and director\, The New Democracy Coalition \nElizabeth Solomon\, Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag \nSponsored by Massachusetts Peace Action\, North American Indian Center of Boston\, and Cambridge Friends Meeting – Peace & Social Concerns Committee \nNote: location changed!

SUMMARY:MVP Leadership Training to Take
DESCRIPTION:Last January\, MVP leaders had their first-ever Executive Council retreat as a way to bond and to share a vision for what would become MVP’s Year Of Action. The event including a training by Kevin Odell\, the InterValley Project’s director of development\, as well as sessions led by the organizing staff. In evaluating the retreat\, MVP leaders felt it was a good way to come together after the holiday season and to plan strategies and tactics needed for a successful year. The organizing staff noted the feedback and wanted to find a way to make the next year’s retreat even more meaningful. \nWith that idea in mind\, MVP leaders have planned a full-day leadership training for Saturday\, January 19th. This event will run from 9:30 – 4:30and will include snacks and lunch\, provided by MVP. In addition to our Executive Council members\, MVP is inviting all our leaders who would like to share their vision for MVP in 2019 to attend. The training will be divided up into a morning and afternoon session with the morning focusing on the theory and practice of organizing while the afternoon will focus on fundraising tactics and strategies. Leading the morning session will again be Kevin Odell along with Luke Hill of the InterValley Project and leading the afternoon session will be Kathy Sharkey of the Peace Development Fund. By the end\, MVP’s core team of leaders will have a plan in place to make 2019 another strong year for social justice work in the Merrimack Valley. \nIf you would like to attend the event and have not already expressed interest to an organizer\, please email Trevor LaFauci at TrevorLaFauciMVP@gmail.com to be added to our roster so we can coordinate food and transportation for all attendees.

SUMMARY:Safe Communities Act Lobby Day
DESCRIPTION:Over the past two years\, we’ve built a statewide movement to protect the rights and safety of all Massachusetts residents. We’ve passed trust and welcoming policies in dozens of communities. Now it’s time to ensure that everyone in our Commonwealth enjoys those protections. \nThe Safe Communities Act is back before the Mass. Legislature\, as SD.926 (Sen. Jamie Eldridge) and HD.1520 (Reps. Ruth Balser and Liz Miranda). It’s streamlined but has the same strong provisions to restore community trust and protect civil rights\, backed by a broad-based and diverse coalition. \nThe first step in our campaign is to recruit legislative cosponsors. On this lobby day\, with just two days to go before the Feb. 1 cosponsor deadline\, Safe Communities Coalition members will fan out across the State House\, visiting legislators to urge them to sign on and to fight to pass the Safe Communities Act in this session. \nLook up your legislators’ contact information to make advance appointments (preferred)\, and download our new factsheet to prepare for your visit and share a copy with legislative staff. Any questions\, please email us!

SUMMARY:Breaking the Cycle of Homelessness and Poor Health
DESCRIPTION:January 30 – 4:30-6:00 p.m.\, Boston University School of Public Health\n\nBreaking the Cycle of Homelessness and Poor Health\n\n\nFind tickets here. \n\nHomelessness and poor health are intricately linked. Physical and mental health issues are personal risk factors for homelessness\, particularly for older adults. Once homeless\, individuals are less likely to have access to health services and are at greater risk for a wide range of adverse health outcomes that can in turn make it harder for them to return to housing. About 70 percent of homeless people in King County\, Washington\, report one or more chronic health conditions\, such as physical disabilities\, chronic substance use\, and severe mental health conditions. About half say their condition prevents them from holding employment\, living in stable housing\, or taking care of themselves. It is nearly impossible to effectively deliver health care or supportive services for this scope of problems when people live outdoors in scattered and insecure locations. What can we in the public health community do to help break the cycle of homelessness and poor health?\n\nSpeaker: Hilary Godwin\, Dean and Professor\, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences\, University of Washington School of Public Health

SUMMARY:Resist Howard Schultz Peaceful Protest
