SUMMARY:MEJA Winter Assembly
DESCRIPTION:We’re bringing together the students\, parents\, educators\, and the whole MEJA community for a MEJA Winter Assembly. \nBuilding off of our statewide convening in the summer\, we will be planning our path forward for the new year\, talking about the Fund Our Future campaign to fund our public schools and colleges\, and holding sessions on testing\, privatization\, student debt\, the school-to-prison pipeline\, parent and community organizing\, student power\, and much more. \nWhen: Saturday\, December 15th from 11AM to 6PM\nWhere: Boston\, exact location TBD \nWe will hold youth-only breakouts\, a PHENOM meeting\, and other special sessions by member organizations. We’ll also discuss the public education landscape following the election and going into the new legislative session on Beacon Hill. Charter school privatizers are trying to co-opt social justice language to advocate privatization\, and they have a friend in Governor Baker. \nWe need fully funded schools where teachers have the freedom to teach and students have the freedom to learn.

SUMMARY:Circle Up Lowell
DESCRIPTION:Lowell-area organizations that promote restorative values in their work are joining together for a special night to discuss opportunities to deepen restorative practices in Lowell. Using the film Circle Up as a starting point for conversation\, this community event will facilitate discussions about restorative practices with opportunities to meet and learn about organizations in Lowell who share restorative values. Organizations will table and mingle with participants to share their efforts during networking time before and after the screening. Participating organizations will help facilitate small-circle discussions following the film to allow people to process the film as a community and imagine opportunities to strengthen restorative practices in Lowell. \nCircle Up is a documentary that shares the journey of a mother\, Janet Connors\, after the brutal slaying of her teenage son as she reaches out to her son’s killer to offer a chance at forgiveness. They team up with a group of mothers of murdered children to help young people in their community break the chain of violence and revenge. Circle Up is a call to action for reframing approaches to crime and punishment through the lens of restorative justice\, forgiveness\, and accountability. \nThis Lowell event seeks to strengthen community-based efforts for restorative practices and nurture vital conversations relating to the prevention of and response to harm within the Lowell community. Participating partners include organizations promoting restorative practices in their work with survivors and victims\, individuals recovering from addiction\, people returning from incarceration\, and diversion from incarceration. \nCome join the conversation and Circle Up Lowell! \nLearn more about the film Circle Up here: http://www.circleupdoc.com \nPlanning your night – schedule for the evening: \n5:00 – 5:30 Doors Open – Networking with Organizations promoting Restorative Practices + Food\n5:30 – 7:00 Opening Remarks & Film Screening – Circle Up\n7:00 – 7:20 Guest Speakers\n7:20 – 8:30 Circle Process – Small Group Reflections\n8:15 – 8:30 Closing Remarks\n8:30 – 9:00 After the Show – bonus time to speak with guest speakers for those who want to stay

SUMMARY:Resolution to support thousands of Central American migrants
DESCRIPTION:SAVE THE DATE! \nAt the request of Centro Presente\, City Councilor Josh Zakim will propose a Boston City Council resolution to support thousands of Central American migrants that are part of a caravan escaping from extreme violence and seeking safety. \nWHEN: Wednesday\, December\, 5th at 12:00pm\nWHERE: City Council Ianella Chambers\, 5th Floor\, Boston City Hall \nThe Boston City Council will discuss a resolution to support thousands of Central American migrants that have fled their homes because of the distress in their country. “We thank Boston City Councilor Josh Zakim\, for supporting this initiative and being the author of our resolution.” \nCentro Presente stands in solidarity with the caravan of Central American immigrants and reiterates that it will continue to defend and work to promote the protection and respect for the human rights of all migrants\, whatever their condition or circumstance\, with special attention to women\, children and members of the LGBTQ community\, who are more marginalized and at greater risk of suffering human rights violations. \n“We call for the governments of the region to respect the human rights of migrants\, members of the caravan and of all those people who are forced to migrate as a last option to survive. We reiterate that there continues to be a series of structural factors such as poverty\, inequality\, violence and social exclusion\, which act as the main factors in the expulsion of people from their countries of origin\,” declared Patricia Montes\, Executive Director of Centro Presente. \nPatricia Montes\, Centro Presente (617) 483 2937

SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Our 9th annual vigil for International Transgender Day of Remembrance on Saturday\, November 17\, beginning at 6pm . The vigil is organized by the Welcoming Congregation Committee of the church\, as part of our commitment to being welcoming and inclusive by honoring the dates that are special to members of the LGBTQ+ community and advocating on issues important to them. \nThe event will begin at 6pm with a gathering\, a procession\, and a brief ceremony on the Chelmsford Common. \nThe second part of the lay-led vigil will meet in the Chapel (next to the parking lot). In a service that will include music\, the names of those killed around the world during the past year as a result of transphobia will be read. The vigil will end with words by Pat Taber and a brief period of fellowship. \nThere will be child care. \nPeople are welcome to come for either or both parts of the vigil. \nPat Taber is a transgender person who has been a political activist on this year’s campaign to preserve Massachusetts’ Transgender Public Accommodations protection Law. She is a veteran\, a proud father and a software engineer. She has a deep connection to the transgender community and strongly promotes trans inclusion into society at large. She views being transgender as a gift given to a select few as a part of God’s plan for humanity. She views the death of a transgender person to be a loss\, not just to the community\, but to a society that needs the unique gifts they bring. \nInternational Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is observed every November around the world. TDOR was first organized in 1999 by transgender woman and activist Gwendolyn Ann Smith\, marking the murder of Rita Hester the previous year in Allston\, Massachusetts. It has been held annually ever since in a growing number of locations to raise awareness about the continued violence that the transgender community suffers because of intolerance. While the official date is November 20\, observances are often scheduled on various dates within a week or so\, so that nearby events do not conflict with each other. \nThe church is located at 2 Westford Street\, on the Chelmsford Common.

SUMMARY:Ollin Solidarity Caravan: Freedom of Movement Is a Human Right
DESCRIPTION:No Borders\, No Walls\, No Prisons! We will not be complicit!\nOllin is the Nahuatl word for movement and everyone has the right to move whether it be because of political\, economic or corporate violence\, oppression\, racial or sexual discrimination\, environmental catastrophe or circumstances\, to connect with family and friends\, or just because they have the desire to do so. We will gather outside immigration court to participate in a vigil; a land honoring ceremony; dance\, drumming\, and music; to say the names and share the stories of those on the migrant caravan being stopped by armed military\, borders and walls\, along with those facing ICE violence and imprisonment right here in Boston. We will stand against the threat to birthright citizenship and for the right for our community to obtain driver’s licenses. We will insist that all relationships with ICE be severed and for permanent protection for all. Afterwards we will form our own “Solidarity Caravan” and move through the streets to South Bay Detention Center to deliver our messages and well wishes to those being held inside and demand that Sheriff Tompkins ends the ICE contract! \nSin Fronteras\, Sin Muros\, Sin Prisiones!
