SUMMARY:Join Michelle at the MBTA's Public Meeting to Oppose Fare Hikes
DESCRIPTION:Sign On To Oppose MBTA Fare Hikes \nIn December 2018 the State’s Commission on the Future of Transportation and the City of Boston’s Carbon Free Boston initiative each released a report highlighting the urgent need for us to grow public transit ridership\, for our economy and for environment. One month later\, the MBTA announced proposed fare increases that would lead to continued ridership declines. There is no time left to delay in addressing climate change and income inequality. Instead of fare hikes\, we should be discussing bold ideas to invest in transit. \nThe MBTA is hosting a public meeting to collect feedback on the fare increase proposal on Wednesday\, February 27th at 6:30PM\, at the State Transportation Building (10 Park Plaza\, Boston). We intend to present this petition with signatures at that meeting. \nPlease sign on below and join us in person if you can! \nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfxZqYUEiEMFy0Hb6oiJ2lsWkdwaeNIlJ7RuJTeF4XbU7ja4Q/viewform

SUMMARY:Dignity Marches through all MA / Marchas por la Dignidad
DESCRIPTION:oin us as we cover the entire state of MA in Cosecha’s hotline for immigrant workers who haven’t gotten their pay! Bit.ly/march2dignidad \nMA is facing a crisis where hundreds of thousands of immigrant workers everyday are working without pay. The workers who are building homes and luxury condos\, serving our food and washing our dishes in restaurants\, and cleaning our homes and offices are being denied basic dignity and respect. Many of us who depend on their hard work don’t even know this is happening. \nCosecha’s Trabajando con Dignidad (Working with Dignity) Program is covering all cities of MA with posters of our hotline that workers can call if they haven’t been paid at work. We are seeking to make this crisis go public so that everyone knows what’s really going on in homes\, offices\, restaurants and construction sites. \nOn March 2nd\, small teams will spread out across the state hanging up our posters on every street corner and store window so that workers know they can come together and fight for their wages\, their dignity and their respect. Exact locations TBD\, depending on the availability of people who sign up. For those that can\, we will be meeting in Boston for breakfast\, splitting up and coming back together for dinner. For those that cannot come to Boston\, we can find a time to meet up with you beforehand and give you a packet of posters! \nSign up here! Can’t make it on the 2nd? Have more time to give? We will also be doing Dignity Marches every Wednesday and Saturday during the month of February. Use this form to help us out during February as well! \nBit.ly/march2dignidad

SUMMARY:Day of Empathy
DESCRIPTION:March 5 – 9:00-5:00 p.m.\, Massachusetts Statehouse\n \nDay of Empathy\n\n\nDay of Empathy is a national day of action to generate empathy on a massive scale for millions of Americans impacted by the criminal justice system.\n\nOn March 5\, 2019\, Americans impacted by the criminal justice system nationwide will meet with lawmakers to share their stories and experiences.\n\nIn order to reform our criminal justice system\, we must first humanize and empathize with those who are impacted by it. This includes crime survivors and those who have committed crimes.\n\nThe Day of Empathy highlights the need for #JusticeReformNOW and shares the perspectives of Americans impacted by the current justice system – from survivors of violent crime to those who are addicted to opioids or other drugs and those who are mentally ill to incarcerated individuals working to transform themselves\, people with a criminal record desperately seeking a second chance\, and all community members impacted by crime\, public safety\, and violence.\n\nWithout empathy\, we cannot achieve meaningful policy changes that keep our communities safe\, our families whole\, and our economy strong.

SUMMARY:Final Push! No MBTA Fare Hikes
DESCRIPTION:The MBTA’s governing board will vote on the proposed fare hikes this Monday\, March 11th at their 12PM meeting\, but not before hearing public testimony from anyone who signs up. Join me there to speak up in this final push and keep up pressure on transit equity and sustainable funding\, NOT regressive fare hikes! \nOver the last few weeks\, 3\,000+ commuters have signed our petition opposing fare hikes and calling for sustainable funding and steps to expand transit access such as free student and senior passes\, low-income fares and fare-capping\, and designated fare-free bus routes through underserved communities. After we organized to pack the MBTA’s public meeting last Wednesday\, several T Board Members signaled that they’d like to see changes in the fare proposal. You can read more about this here: https://commonwealthmagazine.org/transportation/t-board-wary-of-go-it-alone-fare-hike/ \nMonday’s 12PM public comment period is the last and perhaps most important chance to remind the MBTA board of what’s at stake for our climate\, economy\, and future. Anyone who signs up by the start of the meeting will be given the chance to speak before the board begins their deliberations. Join me to say NO to regressive\, short-sighted fare hikes; YES to transit equity and a Boston that works for all of us! \nLink to petition: bit.ly/FreeTheT

SUMMARY:Time's Up Harvard Rally
DESCRIPTION:Join us to rally for fair and neutral third-party recourse for survivors and tell Harvard #TimesUp! \nIn contract negotiations\, the Harvard administration is insisting that survivors of sexual harassment and race- or disability-based discrimination should have to rely on their in-house “dispute resolution” process. That means that a Harvard employee always has the final say. We’ve seen who that process protects\, and it’s not survivors. For any other contract violation\, student workers can take their case before an outside arbitrator with no conflict of interest. Why won’t Harvard allow harassment and discrimination survivors to access that same resource? \nWe demand #NoCarveOut for sexual harassment and discrimination protections\, and a #ContractNow for a safer and healthier university for all. \nCosponsors: Harvard Graduate Women in Science and Engineering (HGWiSE)\, Harvard Ethnic Studies Coalition\, Harvard Task Force on Asian and Pacific American Studies (TAPAS)\, Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA)\, La Alianza\, Lambda at HLS\, Pipeline Parity Project\, Harvard African Law Association\, Caribbean Law Students Association\, Harvard Legal Aid Bureau\, HLS Labor & Employment Action Project at HLS\, Project No One Leaves\, HLS National Lawyers’ Guild\, HLS Progressive Jewish Alliance

SUMMARY:MA Youth Climate Strike
DESCRIPTION:As part of the global movement\, youth from across Massachusetts will be striking on March 15 to fight for our futures & demand that our lawmakers put an end to climate change. #YouthStrikesUSA #ClimateStrike #YouthClimateStrike #GreenNewDeal \nWe\, the youth of America\, are striking because decades of inaction has left us with just 11 years (or less) to solve the climate crisis. We are striking because the necessary action to achieve the common-sense and vital goal of fighting climate change is not being prioritized. We are striking because marginalized communities across our nation —especially indigenous\, black\, and low income communities— are already disproportionately impacted by climate change\, yet\, few people in positions of power have acknowledged this reality\, and even fewer have begun to confront it appropriately. \nWe are at a turning point in history. Our futures are at stake. We call for radical legislative action to combat climate change and its countless detrimental effects on the American people. We are striking for the Green New Deal\, a fair and just transition to decarbonize the US economy\, and other legislative action that combats the effects of climate change. We stand in solidarity with Greta Thunberg and all youth strikers worldwide as we demand action on this issue. \nWhy should we go to school and learn to prepare ourselves for our future when our future is not being protected by our country’s lawmakers? Why should we go to school to learn information and facts\, when facts are clearly not valued by our country who fails to look at the facts and take action against climate change? \nWe are running out of time\, and we won’t be silent any longer. We\, the youth of America\, are striking because our present and future on this planet are at stake. \nAnd we are determined to do something about it.

SUMMARY:Where's My Health Care? - A Forum to Change Our Health Insurance
DESCRIPTION:Let’s improve the health care system to save money and time without sacrificing medical care. \nMassachusetts is one of the best states for health care\, yet we have not escaped the inflated prices. Learn how we can change our policies and make an impact. We did it as a state in 2006 with Romneycare and we can do even better. \nWe all have experienced or know someone who has:\n• put off going to a doctor or treatment due to a copay or high deductible\n• struggled to pay for their necessary medication\n• spent hours battling with the insurance company going from one representative to another\n• had a doctor spend only 5 minuted with them to move onto another patient\n• waited for hours for their appointment\n• turned to GoFundMe to pay for medical bills & treatment\n• traveled to another country for medicine or surgery\n• and even more \nWe are one of the wealthiest countries in the world\, yet pay almost twice what the average is for similar countries ($10\,224 vs the average of $5\,280). \nWe can do better. \nAnd we want to do better. About 70% of Americans state health care as their primary concern at elections. \nYet\, little has changed. \nLet’s start having a dialogue to improve the system. \nWe need to know our options\, talk to others about them\, and start putting pressure on our legislators. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, April 10th at 7pm at the Maynard Public Library for a forum composed of medical professionals\, legislators\, business owners\, and average people who want to save money and create a better health care system. \nThe Panel is composed of:\n• Jamie Eldridge (State Senator and author of Medicare for All S.683 bill)\n• Bill Taylor\, MD (Public Health doctor\, formerly of the CDC)\n• Kate Murphy\, RN (Staff nurse at Brigham and Women’s Hospital)\n• Eliot Prisby (local business owner)\n• Kimberley Connors (patient rights) \nPlease bring your questions. \nHealth shouldn’t be a luxury. \nInvite your friends and let’s improve health care together.\nIf you can’t come\, but want to learn more\, get a More Info ticket to receive a slide show and learn about future events. \n********* \nThree Rivers Affinity Groups is a Chapter of Progressive Massachusetts.

SUMMARY:Tell the Truth! Ring the Alarm on Climate Emergency
DESCRIPTION:One out of three people in the Boston Metro area remain unaware of the most basic fact that global warming is caused mostly by human activities (Yale Climate Opinion Maps\, Dec 2018). \n~~ TELL THE TRUTH ~~\nExtinction Rebellion is here to tell the truth\, and act with the urgency that the truth demands. \nOn April 17th at noon\, XR Boston begins its non-violent uprising against the long-standing criminal inaction on our planet’s ecological breakdown. Our governments and the media have failed to tell the full truth about the climate crisis and local environmental emergencies\, and failed to wholly communicate the need for drastic action in order to save life on our planet. \nWe will gather at the site of the Boston Massacre at noon and present a call to action to the Boston Globe\, urging them to help us bring about the transformational change needed to face the ecological crisis. We will then take publicly disruptive\, non-violent action to declare what we know to be true\, and upend the repressive silence around the climate emergency. \n~~ PLEASE BRING BELLS ~~\nIf you have any\, please bring bells or chimes so that we can sound the alarm together and summon our communities into action. Bells have a multiplicity of meanings across cultural and spiritual traditions. We invite you to hold those at the action as appropriate. \n~~ OFFSITE ACTION ~~\nWe hope we’ll see you there\, but if you can’t make it\, help us from afar\, starting at 1PM:\nhttps://xrmass.org/boston-globe-plan \n~~ HASHTAGS ~~\n#ExtinctionRebellion\, #InternationalRebellion\, #xrus\, #xrmass \n<– FAQ –>\n1. I love the Globe — and they do report on climate change! Why not make a call to action at a media outlet that denies climate change? \nWe need help informing the public on the climate emergency and we think the Boston Globe is the best placed organization to do it. They already know that climate change is a problem\, it’s in their mission to “expose the truth\, even in defiance of powerful interests” (and their history lives up to this — think Spotlight)\, and they have several excellent writers who have devoted themselves to reporting on the environment. We are asking Globe Editor Brian McGrory to prioritize the work of those writers so that the Globe’s reporting is commensurate with the scale of this existential crisis. \nWe are making a constructive call to action for the Globe to lead on fixing systemic issues. The whole media system has shortcomings when it comes to the climate crisis\, and we don’t blame the Globe for this. We are approaching this in the hopes of building a constructive relationship\, which is why we contacted Editor Brian McGrory several times with a request to speak together. We will continue to do so\, even after we present our call to action. Extinction Rebellion hopes that writers and other staff at the Globe understand that we are coming from a place of deeply appreciating their work and seeing this as an opportunity for leadership. \nWe aren’t spending our limited energy to ask those media outlets that deny the climate crisis to shape up their act. The problem is far too urgent to spend a lot of time convincing deniers that they should change their minds. Extinction Rebellion hopes to get 3.5% of the population involved in our actions\, which has been shown by Harvard professor Erica Chenoweth to be an effective way to promote change. \n2. But\, it’s not the Globe’s problems\, it’s the system! \nWe agree that the climate and ecological crises are systemic in nature and that systemic change is needed to address them. However\, systemic change only follows those brave enough to push for it. Historically\, the Globe has contributed crucial and intrepid reporting to oust other kinds of systemic failures. Now\, we respectfully ask that they take up that mantle again with regards to the climate crisis. We recognize that this is a difficult task and that many institutional barriers exist which block effective reporting — not least of which is the fact that the public has not historically been interested in reading about the environment. But at a time when young peoples’ futures are being crushed in front of their eyes; when fossil fuel companies put out greenwashing advertisements\, all the while spending hundreds of millions on lobbying to secure billions in continued subsidies; and when the arctic is melting far faster than predicted\, institutions like the Globe need to cover this escalating collapse as they would a third world war. There is a story here that people will want to hear—we know\, because we have been constantly surprised by the number of people desperate for the truth which Extinction Rebellion is committed to telling.
