SUMMARY:FreeSiham Protest Against Child Deportations
DESCRIPTION:Every Tuesday at the immigration court in the JFK Federal Building\, in the heart of Boston\, children without legal representation are brought before a judge and then deported\, often times to situations that are extremely dangerous. \nIn January\, Boston Mayor Marty Walsh declared that Boston would be a sanctuary for immigrants. He even offered his office as a literal sanctuary to immigrants facing deportation. Yet every Tuesday since making that promise\, dozens of children have been deported within sight of Mayor Walsh’s office. Often they are arrested and detained with the full support and collaboration of city officials and law enforcement. \nJoin us on Tuesday\, January 9th to stand in solidarity with the children who will be in court on that day\, pleading for the chance to remain safely in the U.S. We also have two demands:\n1. That the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families release a public statement against Siham Byah’s deportation\, and that they end any collaboration with the ICE attacks that are devastating Massachusetts families.\n2. That Siham Byah be returned to the United States immediately and given the opportunity to present her case for asylum in the United States. Siham was notified of her pending asylum case and then deported by ICE\, in violation of the law\, before her case could be heard.

SUMMARY:Rally for Transit\, Not Traffic
DESCRIPTION:Over the next nine-years the Massachusetts Department of Transportation is spending $1B on rebuilding a mile stretch of the I-90 turnpike in Allston\, and not providing any improvements to bus or train connections locally or regionally until 2040 (ie. never!). We’re going to meet during the morning rush hour traffic jam at the Double Tree Hotel (without blocking traffic) and demand the MassDOT refocus the project to build the transit station first and not delay it for decades. \nWe will march (on the sidewalks) from the Doubletree/River St Bridge/Cambridge St intersection to Governor Baker’s campaign headquarters at 500 Lincoln Street to let him know that we need West Station NOW! Our neighborhood deserves better transit and we need to let him know. \nJoin us for a few minutes on your way to work or stay & linger for a while. Signs & banners will be provided or bring your own. \nIf you can’t make it but want to support smart growth in Boston’s next new neighborhood\, visit http://peoplespike.org/get-involved to learn how you can write a letter in support

SUMMARY:Automatic Voter Registration Lobby Day 2018
DESCRIPTION:Automatic voter registration (AVR) is the next step in voting rights. It shifts our voter registration system from an opt-in to an opt-out one\, involving more citizens in the political process. It also costs less in the long run and makes voting rolls more accurate and secure. Approximately 680\,000 eligible citizens are currently not registered to vote in Massachusetts–AVR could give them a voice in our democracy. \nThe Election Modernization Coalition will be hosting a lobby day for constituents to sit face-to-face with their representatives and tell them why we need AVR here in Massachusetts. Sign up today to be a part of the movement! \nRegistration and training will take place in Room 428 in the State House (24 Beacon St\, Boston\, MA 02133).
